The truth is, I’ve always known that I wanted to run my own business.

Growing up in a family where both parents already did just that, I’m fortunate that it seemed completely normal to stray away from the corporate world in search of something that was more individual.

After spending three years at university in Oxford I had big plans for my life. Over the course of one summer a strange idea manifested in my head… It was that I should start an online retail business, and without any clue what I was doing or where I was headed, I blindly started the journey of entrepreneurship funded by my student loan.  

Somehow I managed to find manufacturers, and produce a sample run of products that I took to events and sell via my website. My first range sold out, won numerous business awards and things looked to be going great.

But 18 months in I was sat at my desk struggling with something that you’ve probably encountered too.  Overwhelm. I was working from early morning until late into the night trying to juggle customers, marketing, production and accounting all by myself.

I poured all of my money into every possible marketing opportunity in the hope that something would bring in sales, and my desperation grew deeper and deeper every time that it didn’t.

Two years after starting the business with high hopes my dream ended. I was left with no purpose, no money and no idea of what to do next.


 Over the next couple of years I spent my free time trying to figure out what to do with my life whilst holding down some temporary jobs to pay my rent. It was only when I was offered a job at a marketing firm that things started to fit into place.

Ten years on from the failure of my first business I’m relieved that the dream ended earlier than I’d wanted. The years since have given me the opportunity to work for some of the best known brands in the world and learn how they grow online. I soaked up every ounce of information and used it to launch my own agency. 

The biggest thing I learned was how some of the biggest names in the world mastered a wildly successful marketing campaign without having to juggle a million different jobs. In fact, some of the most profitable campaigns I’ve worked on have only one sales method and require just a few hours of maintenance every week.

Working with big budget businesses such as LEGO, Acer, international publishing groups and top 100 apps has meant that I’ve tested out every single marketing method to see what works – and what doesn’t. 

These experiences have meant I’ve been able to start up my own digital marketing agency here in the UK where I work with multi-billion dollar businesses on a daily basis.
